Compared to other similar products, free or otherwise, PostgreSQL is more reliable and it offers better controls. The software is fully ACID compliant, it supports numerous programming languages, most SQL92 and SQL99 data types, as well as foreign keys, views, triggers and more. Also, it is capable of storing large objects and it comes with a highly sophisticated query planner and optimizer. You can enjoy PostgreSQL's functionality without paying anything, because it is offered free of charge and it is open source. What's more, the program is cross-platform, which means that you can use it on Mac OS X, Windows or various Linux distributions.

Getting PostgreSQL up and running involves something more than simply extracting a .app file, but the operation is not difficult. After extracting and running a setup file, a wizard will guide you through an installation process, during which you can make a few initial configurations for a database. By default, the software's components will be stored in a new folder, in the Applications section of your Mac, from where you can run a .app file to bring up an administrative interface.

Servers and their databases, table spaces and other components are displayed in a tree structure, on the left side of PostgreSQL's user interface. Selecting an item will display its contents in the larger area on the right, where you can also view their properties, statistics, dependencies and dependents, on separate tabs. You may create new objects or change the properties of an existing one on a tabbed window, on which you can also insert definitions, variables, privileges and security labels.

The software allows you to input and execute arbitrary SQL queries, for a database's elements, on a separate window. What's more, PostgreSQL provides you with a graphical query builder as well. Rather than typing code, you can simply drag and drop a wide variety of predefined schemas to an editing area. Each schema is displayed as a box, with several column headers, which can be enabled or disabled by clicking their check boxes. It is also possible to create relationships between inserted schemas, by clicking and dragging from one to another, after which you can define the relationship itself, in the lower region of the window.

Pros

The software offers a huge amount of useful features. Its controls are well organized and easy to spot. What's more, PostgreSQL is an open source project and you can use it free of charge, on various platforms.

Cons

There are no clear issues to mention. If you are looking for a reliable relational database system, then you should look no further than PostgreSQL.
