There are several reasons why you would want to get an application like PostgreSQL: it runs on all major operating systems, it has a reputation for being reliable, it is an open source project (meaning you can use PostgreSQL for free), and it has powerful functionality to offer – open source object-relational database system functionality to be more precise.

As mentioned above, PostgreSQL is available for multiple platforms: Windows, Linux, UNIX ((AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64). You can download and install the application with ease on your Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux-powered machine. And as I've already mentioned, PostgreSQL is an open-source project. So, if you want to, you can also get the source code and tinker with it.

On the left hand side of the application’s interface you will notice the Object Browser panel that presents all your servers. Select a server and info about it will be presented in the panel to the right: properties, statistics dependencies, and dependents. At the top there’s a traditional File Menu and a bar with buttons for various functions the application can perform.

To get a better idea of the sort of functionality you can expect to get from PostgreSQL, here’s a quick look at its main features: runs on multiple platforms, provides support for multiple languages, it is fully ACID compliant, it includes most SQL92 and SQL99 data types, it supports storage of large objects, has full support for foreign keys, joins, views, triggers, and stores procedures, it has native programming languages for numerous programming languages, it has a sophisticated query planner/optimizer, it is highly scalable, and more. Since it is a free application, you have all the time in the world to explore and uncover its functionality.

PostgreSQL is a well-known, praised, and properly good relational database system.

Pros

PostgreSQL is available for multiple platforms and in multiple languages. The application has a lot of powerful functionality to offer. More than 15 years of active development, numerous rave reviews. PostgreSQL is an open source project.

Cons

None that I could think of.
